Although unverified, it is said that the South West neighbourhood of Sunalta got its name from the words “sunny” and “Alberta”. This inner-city community lies west of 14 St SW to just past Crowchild Trail, and is north of the escarpment below 17 Ave SW to the Bow River.
Sunalta is an older community which, in the 1950s, was rezoned allowing for the construction of multi-family dwellings and rental apartments. It is a mixed-use community with commercial, light industrial and residential buildings. There is an active community association invested in the preservation of buildings, the urban forest, and in community safety.

About Sunalta Real Estate
Small three-storey apartment buildings began to replace homes in the community in the 1950s when zoning changed from R1 to R2. Many of the remaining homes in Sunalta have been refurbished and restored. Calgary’s first tennis club was located in Sunalta and still has an active membership today.
Other historic sites include Sacred Heart Church on 14 St SW and Scarboro United Church at the base of the escarpment. Sunalta has light industrial business operating on the north end of the community with commercial businesses and retail along 14 St SW and 17 Ave SW.

Young professionals choose real estate in Sunalta due to the community's close proximity to downtown Calgary. Nearby Bow Trail SW takes commuters east and west to Sarcee Trail and the Trans-Canada Highway. The closest major shopping centre is Westbrook on 37 St SW and Market Mall on Shaganappi Trail and 40 Ave NW.
Schools in the neighbourhood include Sacred Heart Separate School and Sunalta School, one of the few remaining sandstone schools from the pre-WWI era. Due to other inner-city closures, it takes in a large student population. Other schools just outside the community are Mount Royal Junior High School and Western Canada High School
