McKenzie is another desirable lake community in southeast Calgary.  This large district with a population of 14,000 people is south of 130 Ave SE to Marquis de Lorne Trail (Stoney Trail), between the Bow River on the west side and Deerfoot Trail on the east side.

The community was built in stages, beginning in the mid-1980s when a developer began construction on a small number of moderately priced homes.  Riding on the popularity of lake communities, a man-made lake was soon built.  Nearby Mountain Park and Legacy Ridge were added in the 1990s, culminating in the diverse neighbourhood of McKenzie Lake today.  The district is named after the McKenzie family who originally homesteaded this land.
