The southwest community of Glendale has an unusual back story. A group of residents began building homes in the mid-1950s and registered their community association even before the City of Calgary annexed the land. It’s an interesting area with a small valley that runs through the middle of the community where the “meadows” area is located on the southern edge of the neighbourhood.
The neighbourhood is south of 17 Ave SW to 26 Ave SW, between 37 St SW and Sarcee Trail SW. Like many mid-century neighbourhoods in Calgary, the community is considered inner-city.

Glendale Real Estate
Homes in Glendale are almost entirely single family detached. Many homes in the north east corner, along 37 St SW and 17 Ave SW are up/down duplexes, with a few mid-rise condo buildings behind a retail centre. Houses towards the valley in Glendale are larger and some of the original homes have been replaced by larger, custom built homes. Lots are 50 feet wide or larger, and there are wide sidewalks on every street.
There is a beautiful community centre with outdoor rinks, tennis courts and a playground. Glendale/Glendale Meadows is very much a family community.
Glendale Community Features
Optimist Park is located on the western edge of the Glendale community, with several baseball diamonds, soccer fields and two indoor hockey rinks. Residents also take advantage of the modern facilities at Westside Rec Centre, just two kilometres west along 17 Ave SW. Downtown is a quick commute via the LRT which stops at 45 St SW and 17 Ave SW, or by car along nearby Bow Trail SW. Groceries, restaurants and a dinner theatre are located at Westbrook Mall.
Schools include Glendale and Glenmeadow Elementary and St. Gregory Junior High. Western Canada High School and St. Mary’s Catholic High School are both a 15-minute bus ride down 17 Ave SW.
