Briar Hill, Calgary is a large inner-city community between 7 Ave NW and 16 Ave NW, and 14 St NW and Crowchild Trail.  This area belonged to the Riley family and was annexed to the City of Calgary in 1906.  All of the real estate to the east of 19 St NW was called Hounsfield Heights in the early days, after Mrs. Riley whose maiden name was Hounsfield.  It is still popularly called this, but is officially now considered Briar Hill.  After being annexed, this area was deemed to be the “Mount Royal” of the north, however it remained largely untouched until after WWII. Extensive building began in the early 1950s and redevelopment started in the early 1990s.
