The southwest community of Altadore River Park is south of 34 Ave SW to 50 Ave SW, and runs from the east side of Crowchild Trail to 14 St SW, including Sandy Beach and River Park. Construction in the community began in 1947 on flat ground above the Elbow River Valley. The original homes built after WWII are fast disappearing at a more accelerated rate than in other communities of similar vintage. The are being replaced by luxury homes and side-by-side duplexes. As per city ordinance, the mature trees are being preserved by developers. On several occasions, Altadore River Park has been declared one of Calgary’s best neighbourhoods by local magazines, likely because of its location along the Elbow River escarpment and to the Marda Loop district.

Altadore River Park is a sought after neighbourhood because it’s so close to downtown, which is just three kilometres to the north – a quick drive via nearby Crowchild Trail or down the hill on 14 St SW. The Marda Loop business area is in the North West corner of Altadore with shopping, coffee shops, wine boutiques and other eclectic retail shops. The Marda Loop Community Association was registered on September 6, 1957. Mount Royal University, Flames Community Arenas, the Military Museum and Garrison Curling Club are all nearby. Schools in the community include Altadore Elementary School, and Dr. Oakley which caters to special learning needs.
