Killarney Homes For Sale - Calgary

The southwest community of Killarney, also referred to as Killarney/Glengarry, is a large community situated between 17 Ave SW and 33 Ave SW, between 37 St SW on the west side and 25A St SW on the east side.  Settlers in the area at the turn of the 20th Century who were of Irish and Scottish descent named the community after places in the old country. Some of the small cottage-style homes still remain.

More homes were built in the 1920s, and after WWII returning soldiers were offered lots in Killarney for just $25 to facilitate their integration back to real life. The historic nature of the community is disappearing with new infill homes replacing original structures on almost a daily basis.

About Killarney Real Estate

The streets of Killarney are laid in a grid pattern typical of pre-war communities.  There are mature trees on every street, preserved despite redevelopment.  Homes in the south end of the community were built in the 1950s when the community was completed, and there is a large townhome complex with exceptionally affordable homes. 

Along the 17 Ave SW commercial area there are mid-rise apartment condominium buildings. The park on the south side of the community has been upgraded to capture storm water and is a wonderful open urban space frequently used for soccer, baseball and even kite flying from time to time. 

Killarney Community Features

You’ll find window shopping along 17 Ave SW with more shopping at nearby Westbrook Mall where there is also a dinner theatre.  There are several bus routes with service from the Killarney neighbourhood to downtown Calgary or to the Westbrook LRT Station.  Crowchild Trail on the east side of the community is the most direct route to the Foothills Hospital, Alberta Children’s Hospital, SAIT and the University of Calgary.

Killarney Elementary School, Holy Name, Vincent Massey and A.E. Cross are all within walking distance in the neighbourhood.  Western Canada High School and St. Mary’s Catholic High School are a short bus trip down 17 Ave SW.
